Who was fired first, and who will be required when the crisis ends…
Although mass dismissal in Latvia has taken place mostly in the production sector, the most significant changes in personnel policies have occurred in building and real estate spheres.
The tidal wave of job cuts in the country will not end soon, as the culmination is expected with the GDP fall at a rate of 2% or even more. But even now the number of the registered unemployed in Riga has increased by 26% comparing with the data of previous year.
The number of the jobless has increased in the regions, as most of the closed enterprises were engaged in retail trading, woodworking industry and were connected with logistics. The number of agricultural workers has decreased as well; the workers of this sphere are seeking for working opportunities abroad.
Transport and logistics workers have faced danger as well. Enterprises of this sphere are gradually decreasing the number of employees (drivers and administrative officers mostly), while the employees themselves are in search of new jobs.
The number of job-seekers among the bank personnel has increased: these are mainly operators and administrative officers.

According to the most optimistic forecasts, most companies will start hiring next year in April. Analysts say, that the crisis will diminish by April 2009. Although there are companies that won’t stop hiring - these are companies that will develop against all the odds (and those will be). The rest will start hiring not earlier than in autumn 2009. In case the crisis follows the “bad” scenario – then not earlier than in autumn, 2010. In any case, hiring won't start later than in spring 2011. In particular, HR specialists say that financial organizations will start hiring specialists again. When credit activities become in full play (without credits business cannot start developing), banks will definitely need credit managers, cashiers and financial analysts.
